To the Editor: Always enjoy your reports from City Hall. Always enlightening and informative. Thanks. But what am I missing or not under-standing? The idea of the Copelands' pro-posed children's home in Victoria has nothing to do with Victoria's compassion for such a facility. Let's hear the actual facts and not be put on a guilt trip as Mary Jo tried to do when she first met with the concerned residents earlier this year. Just how many additional acres of land to non-revenue producing entities does Victoria have to give away? This number of acres within Victoria is astounding, if you care to ask and find out. The infrastructure of this proposed home alone will not be paid by the Cope-lands, so who gets left with the costs? We're told in the August Gazette by Tom Gray, Building Official for Victoria that, with the growing population, Victoria is running out of lots on which to build a home and we have a one year's supply the way things stand now. Victoria keeps expanding parks and recreational facilities, and there is now talk of a Community Center, as reported in the August Gazette. Now we are running short of water capacity during this hot dry spell, often common every summer, and we are to conserve while we install sprinkler systems on our new playing fields. Which is more important - planning ahead for parks and recreational areas or having an adequate water supply for a growing community of houses and needs in case of emergencies? Raising taxes, selling bonds, receiving grants, you name it ... everything comes down on each and every taxpayer. The Gazette reported we are now spend-ing $5,000 to evaluate the city's financial operations and another $5,000 to see why Carver County's taxes are high. Perhaps we are part of the problem. With all the studies that have been conducted, we have failed to move on any downtown development. Our senior housing development has gone nowhere to date. Yet with all these areas of need, we are to be more compassionate and receive the Copelands with open arms and wallets. Just who do our city councilmembers think is going to pay for all of this? City Administrator Steve Sarvi states that our city budget will lose $180,000 and we're going to have to raise taxes just to get where we are now. Victoria is presently a bedroom community, but don't sleep too long or when you wake up, it may be too late. I'm confused and disturbed, aren't you? Please voice your concerns, people of Victoria, to each and every council-member today. Keith Geske, Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: My subscription to the Victoria Gazette has run out or is close to it so, to keep it coming, I'm sending you a check. I enjoy the news and comments from Victoria people and surrounding areas. Natalie Schommer, New Brighton, Minnesota
To the Editor: Since I'm in the changing mood, I thought that I should advise you of our new address, effective September 1st, 2001. As you know, Sonja and I sold our house on Schutz Lake to Marty and Susan Kaye who will, I'm sure, be a real asset to the neighborhood. After 30 years in our home, it was a tough decision. After all, the Orsens, Geskes, Plochers, and Hubers kinda grew up together. You know where we will be living, and if you get a hankering to see us, and maybe even Gizzy, let us know and we'll bring out the Aquavite for you. Best wishes to you and the Alfonse and, of course, Jenny and Nick. Kenny Huber, Walker, Minnesota.
To the Editor: We want to thank our relatives and friends for making our 50th wedding anniversary so special with your presence, best wishes, cards, and gifts. A special thanks to our children and their families for hosting our big day. Love to all of you. Sylvester and Dorleen Schmieg, LeCenter, Minnesota
To the Editor: Minnesotans consider adequate high-ways and effective transit as keys to maintaining our high quality of life in this great state. That's why it's reassuring to me that Victoria State Representative Tom Workman is at the helm, guiding us through our transportation initiatives. As chair of the House Transportation Policy Committee, Representative Work-man brings to the table a thorough under-standing of Minnesota's highway and transit needs. Tom does an outstanding job in striking a balance of a better belt-way system and more efficient transit to reduce metro area traffic congestion, as well as better, safer roads and bridges for folks in Greater Minnesota. Tom continues to display his leader-ship on these issues at the Capitol. Few legislators in Minnesota have the knowledge Representative Workman has in the field of transportation. I'm proud of the vision Tom has shown as chair of the Transportation Policy Committee, and I will continue to rely on him to work with Minnesota citizens, business leaders, and locally elected officials to develop long-term transportation initiatives that will keep our state great in the years to come. Sincerely, Steve Sviggum, Speaker of the House, St. Paul, Minnesota
