[Richard Tieden] There is growing concern over Senior Housing in our community, and most re-cently City Administrator Steve Sarvi and City Planner Mark Kaltsas and I visited The Commons on Maurice, a senior living community in Egan, Minnesota. The facility was most impressive, and I am committed to bringing such a develop-ment to Victoria. Vision is essential to leadership, but you must be capable of implementation and management as well. I believe I have demonstrated this, and I want to continue to lead the City of Victoria. In what ways would you continue the strides and successes made under the leadership of Mayor Mary? Mayor Meuwissen has been a powerful force in the growth of Victoria. I believe she has been successful because she listens to the people, is proficient at focusing on the issues, and then goes about the process of implementation. She has been a great teacher to me about process, and with our sharing of similar philosophy, we have worked together well. I see her as a city treasure and will most certainly call upon her in the consultation of future interests of Victoria. As for me, I approach problem reso-lution in a similar fashion. By gathering all the facts and carefully reviewing the choices, once the decision is made, it needs to be implemented. I will complete our current projects of the field house, Stieger Lake Lane Bridge, reconstruction of Elm, Rose, and Main Streets, and work with the developers in bringing housing and new business to the downtown area. What projects would you hope to initiate in the city in the next five years? 1) The building of a District #112 elemen-tary school in Victoria. 2) A swimming pool as part of the field house complex in Diethelm Park. 3) A senior housing cam-pus that provides a continuum of care that reaches as many of the needs of our citi-zens as possible. 4) Office and retail development in the downtown area, with a focus on services such as a dry cleaners, grocery store, pharmacy, and bakery. 5) An office park with retail and eating establishments as part of the develop-ment south of Deer Run, which soon will be annexed from Laketown Township. Who are your heroes or mentors? At 56 years of age, there have been many people in my life whom I have admired, and many more that have helped me along the way. For them, I am truly thankful. My hero and mentor is Jesus Christ. He has given me life, provided a written word as to how best live it, and continues to bless me each day.
Terrence E. Bishop 8805 Ridge Ponds Drive Victoria, Minnesota 55386 Family: Wife, Lisa, a paralegal; Son, Michael, a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Roy, the Black Lab. Occupation: Attorney/Shareholder at Larkin, Hoffman, Daly & Lindgren, Ltd., a 75-lawyer firm in Bloomington, MN. Victoria resident: Approximately six months. Why would you want to sacrifice family and personal time for hours of city council work and meetings? After a long and thoughtful process, my wife and I chose to live in Victoria because of the unique character of the community. Other residents have made the sacrifice to serve on the city council, with their efforts making Victoria the city that it is today. I am willing to contribute to the continued health of Victoria in any way I can, including city council work and meetings. As you see it, what is the purpose of city government? The purpose of city government is to provide leadership in addressing issues that affect the vitality of the community. What has prepared you to be a leader in the City of Victoria? In my career as an attorney, I am asked to provide advice and counsel to individuals as well as multi-billion dollar companies on a variety of issues. Before providing my opinion, I analyze the facts and the law and then apply a healthy dose of common sense. My clients look to me for leadership in dealing with legal problems as they arise or ways to avoid problems before they occur. This experience has provided me with the skills to work for the citizens/ clients of Victoria in leading the city into the future. In what ways would you continue the strides and successes made under the leadership of Mayor Mary? I believe continued efforts to expand and promote the vitality of the downtown are in order. In addition, the council should provide leadership in promoting planned growth in a way that least impacts the charm that sets Victoria apart. Finally, the council should promote and support the ice arena/ field house. What projects would you hope to initiate in the city in the next five years? I hope to be involved in continuing the re-development of the downtown area. I hope to build upon the success of the pre-vious council and mayor to expand the tax base, rather than increasing the burden on current residents. Who are your heroes or mentors? A few years ago I read The Greatest Gener-ation by Tom Brokaw. It recounts the sacrifices made by my parents' generation to win World War II. I have always admired the independence, hard work, and can-do attitude of my parents and the parents of my childhood friends. In these post 9/11 times, I strive to incorporate the attitude of the Greatest Generation in my everyday life.

Why would you want to sacrifice family and personal time for hours of city council work and meetings? More of a point of view. This is an investment of my time in my family's, my neighbors', and my community's future. As you see it, what is the purpose of city government? 1) To provide a forum for all citizens of a community to have a voice in the establishment of policies that directly affect their daily lives. 2) To focus leadership and seize opportunities for guided growth of the community. 3) To diligently Click here to continue.
