To the Editor: I don't like to get into the business of comparing public and private education, but in his column in the October issue of the Gazette, Mayor Jerry Bohn has made an unfair comparison that I feel I must respond to. Therefore, the following letter to the editor ... Recently, in an attempt to sell to the taxpayers of Victoria the value in dollars of a newly proposed public elementary school, the Mayor of Victoria tried to compare the cost of that new public elementary school to the cost of private education. Although I take no exception with the newly proposed public elemen-tary school, I do take exception with the mayor's comparison. In response I say, Mr. Mayor, there is no comparison. Pleases note that public schools offer the following: *Profiles in Learning and other failed programs that cost the taxpayers many dollars. *Mega schools that can't meet state standards but cost the taxpayers many dollars. *The new Super Teacher program proposal costing the taxpayers many dollars. *And who knows what next. This is as opposed to what private schools offer: *Faith, which is priceless. *Spirituality, which is priceless. *Christian values, which are priceless. *Christian ethics, which are priceless. These private school offerings are at no cost to the taxpayers but are of incomparable value to society. Paul Stauffacher Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: I enjoy the Gazette so much and doing this for my dear friends. We also enjoy it. Found your fishhook on page 26 in the Prairie Lawn and Garden leaves. Thanks. Clarence and Gisella Mieseler Chaska, Minnesota
To the Editor: We have lots of fun looking for the fishhook. Larry found it on page 26 in the Prairie Lawn and Garden ad. Betty Klein, Chanhassen, Minnesota
To the Editor: Enjoy the Indian Summer days! I don't send letters to the editor very often, but I don't miss reading those sent by others. Last month is the first time I missed Kay's. Usually the first thing I do is read the front page, then the letters and your column. This time, however, I was interested in who the "lucky person" was to win the $10, so I started paging to find the Hook, Line & Sinker column and, behold, the fishhook caught my eye without looking for it on page 26 in the Prairie Lawn & Garden ad. It was on the same page as the column. Amazing! I was going to send you a Halloween card but sent this one instead. Happy Halloween to all. Mrs. Frank Schneider Shakopee, Minnesota
To the Editor: You might want to pick up the Octo-ber 1st copy of USA Today. Go to page 4A for the article about the Excelsior Chamber's ad campaign, although we didn't get the credit for heading up the effort. That's okay. It's a great article. Very positive. Should bring us some high visibility. Have a great day. Linda Murrell Excelsior Area Chamber of Commerce, Excelsior, Minnesota
To the Editor: Hi, Sue. Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your newspaper. I live in Bloomington, and whenever I visit my mother, Mary Wurst, the first question I always ask is: "Did a new Gazette come yet?" Your photo album is great. I especially enjoyed the pictures of Lake Minnetonka in the summer. The information you have been pub-lishing about the downtown redevelop-ment in Victoria has been very informa-tive. Keep up the good work. Kathleen Hollingsworth Bloomington, Minnesota
To the Editor: Would it be possible for me to get a copy of an item that appeared in the space now occupied by Notes and Quotes, in a Spring 2002 issue of the Gazette? I'm not sure what issue exactly, but I believe it was entitled "Spirit of 76." Appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks. Kathy Kohn] Chaska, Minnesota
To the Editor: Hi, Sue. I love all of Jenny's car-toons and have especially enjoyed the series on infants. I have "Help! I've fallen and can't get up" and "Ready," but misplaced "Crawling is not as easy as it looks," which is the one just before this last issue. Would it be possible to get a copy e-mailed or faxed to me? Thank you. Mary Bigalke Victoria, Minnesota
