Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:
I don't know if you are aware, but Steve Sarvi was called up for duty with the Minnesota Guard to protect the public at the airport.  This requires a sacrifice from Steve, his family (most important), mayoral responsibilities, and city adminis-tration career here in Victoria.
I thought this might make a good compelling story for the Gazette.  The pic-tures and sound we've seen and heard from Washington and New York have now had a real effect upon us here in Victoria.
Tom Gray, Victoria Building Official

To the Editor:
Just a quick note to let you know, if you hadn't already heard, that my National Guard unit was activated by the Governor on October 1st and I've been serving at the airport since the 5th.  The men in my unit certainly never thought we'd be called for such a mission, but I guess that a lot of things are changing since September 11th.  We are glad to be helping our State and Nation during these unsettling times.  Rest assured that with God's grace we will win.
The real reason I'm writing you is to let you and the rest of the community know that things will of course go forward at Victoria City Hall, with or without me.  (No wisecracks about how they'll go better now!)  I am going to do my personal best to keep some hours at work, but they won't be predictable.  The city staff will be able to handle 'most every issue that comes up, and I'm staying in touch with them on a daily basis.  Answers from me might be a bit slower, but I will do my very best to respond.
Our tour of duty at the airport may take up to six months.  Beyond that is unknown.  The Council has stood by my family and me during this difficult time in our lives.  Their support has been over-whelming, which has allowed me to con-centrate on my family, mission with the Guard, and still be able to squeeze in as much time in Victoria as possible.
Once again, if you need to speak to me, feel free to leave me an e-mail or a phone message.  I'll do my best to get back to you.  Jylan Johnson, the city's finance director, will be in charge of the staff when I'm not around.
Take care and God bless.
Steve Sarvi, Administrator, City of Victoria

To the Editor:
I very much enjoy reading the Gazette and thought that now that the Kelly's are official residents of Victoria, it was high time to plunk my $10.
Mark Kelly, Victoria, Minnesota

To the Editor:
Yesterday, Harriet and I helped the Children's Home Society folk to serve a Korean dinner in Eden Prairie.  Much to our surprise, we saw Dave Kocka and his family and Tom Schmieg and his family.  The kids are so very cute and many were wearing native costumes of Korea.  We like a lot of the Korean food we were serving, but not Kimchee!
It was nice to see you at the Antique Show.
Uncle Ron Holtmeier, Victoria, Minnesota

To the Editor:
The road to Salt Lake City Olympic 2002 Games does not wind through Minnesota, but a local business woman has been selected to carry the torch.  Candace Souweine of Victoria and her Aunt Roz Klein from Oceanside, NY, will be two of 7;000 people to carry the torch as it journeys from Atlanta to Salt Lake City.  Candace and Roz were selected as an "inspirational pair" and will carry the torch through New York, NY, sometime between December 23rd and 26th.
Diane Koban, Victoria, Minnesota

To the Editor:
Hi.  My name is Dr. Luke Benedict.  I was the first physician on the scene of a recent motorcycle accident early Saturday morning, just after midnight, in St. Paul on Interstate 94.  The person was de-ceased when I arrived and I left soon after.
I have yet to see an article in the paper on the person describing what happened, but I did see an obit about a Wade Rustad from Victoria, age 20, who died in a motor-cycle accident.  I was wondering if you could tell me if this, indeed, was the person, and will you be writing an article in your paper about the accident?"
Luke Benedict, MD, via e-mail

EDITOR'S NOTE:  I can only learn of deaths in the community if I am notified.  Usually the obituaries are sent or faxed to me by the funeral directors.  I received no obituary on Wade Rustad.  However, I did recently receive a related item and photo from Pastor Arnold Lemke, which I'm including in this edition on page 38.
