Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:
Those of us who have had an opportunity to conduct business in the City of Victoria know Mary Meuwis-sen to be an individual of high integrity, enthusiasm, and fairness.
I have been involved with city officials for over 32 years, and it is refreshing to deal with someone who has such a passion for her work and community and who has no political agenda in hearings and council meet-ings.  Her heart and energy are with the City of Victoria and coupled with her determination to do the right thing is an unbeatable combination for an elected official.
Karen and I strongly endorse Mary Meuwissen for another term as mayor of the great City of Victoria.

To the Editor:
On November 7th, Victoria will be voting for mayor of Victoria.  As a lifelong resident of Victoria, I encour-age you to vote for Mary Meuwissen.
Mary is concerned about spending out tax dollars wisely and about the issues and growth of our city.  After living in Victoria Circle, fondly known as "Skunk Hollow," for 30+ years, something has finally been done about the stormsewer situation, and I give the credit to Mayor Mary Meuwissen and our current city council.  On November 7th, I hope you help re-elect Mayor Mary Meuwissen.

To the Editor:
Mark Stulz stands to change and redirect Victoria as we approach the orderly annexation of portions of Lake-town Township as mayor.  His vision and working cooperation with the Victoria city councilmembers, school board of District #112 and Carver County Commissioners will greatly enhance our growth and development in these rapidly changing times.  We must not let negative thought and action undermine our economic and residential development in Victoria.
It is absolutely vital to develop the downtown area of Victoria now and without further studies that go nowhere.
Victoria, located in a very enviable geographic setting with lakes and roll-ing terrain, deserves positive forward planning and economic development.
Mark Stulz as mayor will remove the barriers that have divided the com-munity and replace them with walls of cooperation that grow the community to meet the challenges of these chang-ing times.
We urge everyone to vote Novem-ber 7th, 2000, for Mark Stulz for mayor of Victoria.  It's time for change and action.

To the Editor:
I find myself in a unique position, being a resident that lives in the construction area and a worker directly involved with the construction of County Road #11.
The most amazing thing to me is how uninformed some of the residents are about the plethora of differences between
new construction and recon-struction.  Also, what surprises me is that most people don't realize it's our own city's poor records (as-builts) of the existing underground utilities that have been a large factor in the delays of completing the construction of County Road #11.
Let me make this point very clear though:  The city's records are inaccurate but no different than any other city's records for as-builts in the distant past.  Cities in the past just didn't keep records like they do now.
I would also like to make this point very clear:  Those working for the city and county are doing a
great job improvising with the information they have been provided with.  Actually, for a reconstruction project, this one is going along okay, but most people don't realize that because they have never been through a project like this.
So let's get the facts straight.  The construction of County Road #11 is not a new construction project, but instead it's a
reconstruction project dealing with:  the removal of existing curb, sidewalks, blacktop, overhead and underground small utilities, power poles, "unknown" underground utilities, the repair of old existing sewer and water lines, traffic control, detours, and everyone who won't follow the detour signs, and county inspectors doing a great job requiring much more strict requirements than most jobs do.
Then there is the installation which must be done in phases to accommodate local traffic, nonlocal traffic, homeowners, businesses, church, park, and rainy weather in June and July.  Let's not forget that the work on County Road #43 was not even part of this job but was added to the County Road #11 project to help coordinate and speed up other con-struction in town.
When I look at the construction on County Road #11, I see not only a new road and sidewalk, I see the church helped, the city park helped, the golf course helped, and the other construction projects in town helped.
By the way, to the folks on Rhoy Street, Quamoclit Street has been used twice as long as Rhoy Street these past months and many people have rolled on or blown through the stop signs on Quamoclit and drove more than the posted speed limit.  The end is near!
