To the Editor: I am asking new businesses who come into town to note the correct spelling of Stieger and to please have corrections made on all of their records. Even the State of Minnesota and the City of Victoria are not consistent in the spelling on their road signs. Another Victoria resident, Elizabeth Diethelm, has done a lot of research on the matter and determined from the Minnesota Historical Society and John Stieger of St. Paul, a descendant of the lake's namesake, that the correct spelling is Stieger and its pronunciation rhymes with eager. This information, in part, was taken from a July, 1989, issue of the Victoria Gazette, in which there was a neat little poem written by Elizabeth ...
There was once a lake named Stieger, Germans know that rhymes with eager [some do and some do not] But street signs say Steiger And that rhymes with tiger. Now to add to my chagrin We have the Steiger Lake Inn [the Victoria House today] A good place to eat But the spelling is wrong. Our apologies long To the lake's namesake, Carl Stieger, And, again, that rhymes with eager.
I would appreciate everyone in town and out of town making this correction. Thanks a big bunch. Uncle Ron Holtmeier Victoria, Minnesota
EDITOR'S NOTE: I propose that we escape the spelling problem by returning to the common name given that lake in formers days as often noted by Mike Wartman: Lake Victoria.
To the Editor: Again it gives me great pleasure to check the box "KEEP ME ON" the mail-ing list for the Victoria Gazette. Thanks for your super effort to be the "sunshine of truth" as you keep me in touch with Victoria. As I read, I can still hear the music from the bandwagon on Saturday night, in downtown Victoria, even though it's been over 50 years ago. Danny Schwalbe High Point, North Carolina
To the Editor: Enclosed is our remittance to contin-ue our subscription to the Victoria Gazette. We were in Arizona enjoying a break from the Minnesota cold and snow. We certainly enjoy your fine publication and look forward to the latest news and happenings each month. Hello to Al. Pat and Pauline Ahern Chaska, Minnesota
To the Editor: It's Tuesday after Easter. Linda sent me the Gazette as a special Easter present. I am so very busy down here in Naples - tee hee - so told myself today I am going to read the Gazette nonstop! Upon reading your editor's letter and then seeing the remittance envelope picture, I realized I have not paid you for your wonderful paper, quite possibly for a couple of years. Then, as I am reading, I decided to, once again, try to find that darn fishhook. Thought maybe I would have to call my brother Don for help when, lo and behold, on page 29 I found it in the Easter ham in Mackenthun's ad. To make my joy complete, not until I got to the last page did I see the picture and article about my little granddaughter gymnast, Kayla. Ron and I happened to be in Denver for that event and we were so very proud of her accomplishments. So a special thank you, Sue, for con-tinuing to keep us informed on what is happening in our beloved Victoria. Truly enjoy reading everything. We will be home in Victoria soon, after we are sure the weather will be warm. Love, Bonnie Fritz Naples, Florida
To the Editor: I sure enjoy your paper. Keep it up. The fishhook is on page 29 in the Mack-enthun's ad around the front of the ham. Ruth Eiden Waconia, Minnesota
To the Editor: Hey, Suzie! I originally meant to give you this subscription money to the Gazette in person. However, I'm not able to make it to choir lately. Keep up the good work with your newspaper. Have a blessed Easter. Christine Determan Chanhassen, Minnesota
