Something smells fishy in the State of Denmark, I mean Minnesota. But it doesn't smell half as bad as leftover boiled cabbage in the refrigerator. Oofda! I tried to keep the lid on it, but whenever I'm looking for something to munch on, I open the frig and pick up the lid to see what's in the pot. Never mind that I've checked the pot 18 times already, it's a matter of wishful thinking. "If I look in the pot one more time, maybe it'll turn into apple crisp or strawberry shortcake." Anahow, as the cowboy would say, that's how you lose weight. When the aroma of cooked cabbage floods your senses, you're not hungry anymore. Pretty good trick, really. Anybody can learn it by following a few simple directions: Take whole head of raw cabbage out of refrigerator. Peel off the funny outer leaves and cut out the core. Place it into a pot with about a half inch or so of water and put the lid on the pot. Set it on the burner until it comes to a boil, then turn down the heat and cook until tender. Lift it gently onto a large platter and cut it into fourths, inside to the out. Take one of the fourths, pour melted butter on it, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Watch husband do the same. After eating, put the two leftover fourths back in the pot, put the lid on it, and set it on a shelf in the refrigerator. That's all there is to it. Every time you open the frig and pick up the lid, you'll lose your appetite. Now if you instead would open the Gazette every time you're about to open the refrigerator door, not only would you lose weight, you'd gain insights into the world around you. AND you could look for the fishhook hidden in each and every edition and throw your name in the ring (the minnow bucket) for a chance at the $10 drawing. This time Elaine Sholl of Victoria gets the honors. The fishhook was hidden in the quill of the Gazette logo. Many of you had trouble finding it this time, which I don't understand because it pops out plain as day to me. Nothing fishy about it. If you find the hook hidden in this issue of the Gazette, drop a line or email indicating its location and sinker to my address. Good luck. Now I'm going to eat the rest of that cabbage.
