To the Editor: Remember those 1950's cartoons of Droopy Shows? The dog's name is Butch and he always tries to outsmart Droopy, but Droopy is always quicker. I still like those old cartoons. I've known little Mikey Drazan since he lived on Willow Street in Chaska 30 years ago. His nickname is Droopy. He and my little brother Gerry (Fuzz) would play football with the other neighborhood boys. We lived on the next street. The Droopy house is still there, as is ours. Dad sold our house two years ago. A family with a daycare lives there now. Last spring, when I got my new electric wheelchair, I went driving around the old neighborhood and it's just like I remembered. Most of the houses are still the same color as when I lived there. I could still see Mom in the garden and Dad cleaning golf balls in the old wringer washer or putzing outside and setting traps for gophers and moles. I could still see Mom hanging out wash with about eight lines full, and pushing snow off the back roof in the winter. Ah, yes, it's almost ten years ago since my injury. There are a lot of memories in seeing the old place and remembering the mischief too. Now spring is coming. Get your fish house off the lake!!! Kay Meuwissen Chaska, Minnesota
To the Editor: A big thank you to the Carver County Commissioners for allowing Leanne Brown to give the Andrew Peterson ad hoc Committee of the Waconia Heritage Association help in preparing the application to the Minnesota Preservation Alliance to place the Andrew Peterson buildings on the ten most endangered historic Minnesota properties list. Leanne's assistance was great and deeply appreciated by the committee. Harriet and I delivered ten copies of the nomination form to Bonnie McDonald, Executive Director of the Minnesota Preservation Alliance, at her office in the Landmark Center in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. This was done on February 9th, 2006. An email sent by Jan Hermelin was received and forwarded to Bonnie on February 10th for inclusion with the photos. It should be noted that each packet contained 19 pages, which included answering questions, photos of the farm buildings, articles from several news-papers, a map of the property, plus letters of recommendations to have the Peterson farmstead put "on the list." These letters were from the Carver County Historical Society and from the author, Dr. Steven R. Hoffbeck, Historian and Associate Professor of History, Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Dr. Hoffbeck has written about the life of Andrew Peterson in a book entitled The Haymakers: A Chronicle of Five Farm Families (St. Paul: Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2000).
