Nimrod Chronicler. Another visitor to the editor's kitchen counter last month was Jerry Mevissen, the most famous person in Nimrod, Minnesota. (As he says about many things, "You gotta go where the spirit moves you.") In addition to his talents in appraising real estate and tending to farm and livestock, Jerry has been writing a column entitled Nimrod Chronicles for the Review Messenger since December of 2000. And now, as the author of a book entitled Nimrod Chronicles: Life in Nimrod, Minnesota, he is speaking and appearing at book signings. The most intimate chapter in his book is on page 204. Entitled simply, "Father's Day," it gives me a glimpse inside the man I used to see and greet at the Victoria Post Office when he lived and worked in this area. As with every other member of the human race, this author enjoys acceptance and love and he especially looked for it from his father. Today he finds closeness in the tiny community of Nimrod, population 70. In focusing on his Nimrod friends and neighbors, who are like his kinfolk in some ways, Jerry gives a chronicle of names, lives, and activities whereby we catch glimpses into the heart of every small community as well as the heart of Jerry Mevissen. Nimrod Chronicles is available at most bookstores (including those at Excelsior and Wayzata) and also at www.nimrodchronicles.com for $16.95. Thanks for stopping, Jerry, and for the autographs.
Girl Scout Troupers. Our troop greatly appreciates you running this ad for our Girl Scout Cookie Shop. This is our main source of funding for the year. Our girls want to use this source to earn Girl Scout patches, Girl Scout credits to be used toward camp and other programs, and they want to do a good deed for the community. We're thinking about a working trip to the Carver County Foodshelf. I've attached a troop picture to run with the ad. Here is the information. Girl Scout Troop #1165 will be hosting a Cookie Shop at the Victoria Field House, 8475 Kochia Lane, on Saturday, March 6th, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., as well as on Sun-day, March 7th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The girls will be selling all the favorite Girl Scout Cookie flavors plus a new cookie called "Pinata." Proceeds will help the troop earn Girl Scout patches, camp credits, and provide community service work. Stop by and stock up on your favorite Girl Scout Cookies. Again, thanks much. Silly Snowmobilers. Hi, Sue. As promised, here are some photos from our recent snowmobile trip. Michelle's sled is the red one. Mine is black. Patrick McNallan St. Victoria, Minnesota
Subject: Tough Times. Received 2/06/04 I lived on a farm when I was a child. Times were hard back then, and the area where I lived was economically depressed. I knew that the neighbors were having a hard time making ends meet. One day I heard a knock at the door and when I went to answer, I saw the sad sight above. Pat Ahern Chaska, Minnesota
