IT REMAINS ONE NATION UNDER GOD Victoria City Councilmembers, under the leadership of Mayor Mary Thun, held a special flag raising ceremony on Thursday evening, May 24th, just prior to the scheduled city council meeting. According to City Administrator Dave Urbia, the City of Victoria purchased 40 new U.S. flags for placement on the decorative light fixtures in downtown Victoria. These flags will be displayed on patriotic holidays throughout the year. Troy Walsh, a city employee in the Public Works Department and a member of the Victoria Fire Department, had the honors of climbing a ladder and setting the first flag in place immediately in front of Victoria City Hall. The city's Public Works crew installed the remainder of the flags in downtown Victoria in time for Memorial Day. Mayor Thun spoke of several members of the U.S. services currently on duty, including City Administrator Steve Sarvi who has been deployed for so long now in Iraq and is expected home this fall. She thanked Steve and family for their sacrifices on behalf of the citizens of this great country and their effort to help advance the cause of freedom in the world. Mayor Thun thanked all veterans who have served in wartime and in peace time. She especially thanked those veterans who were able to attend the May 24th evening. They included Keith Geske of Victoria, who served in the U.S. Army. The mayor said she had received a call from Keith and that he was instrumental in asking the city to display more U.S. flags. Marvin Reich of Victoria was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1944 during World War II. Randy Maluchnik, who represents the people of Victoria as Carver County Commissioner, was a member of the Wyoming National Guard and North Dakota National Guard. Gene Meuwissen of Chaska, volunteered for the draft and served in the U.S. Army in 1943 during World War II. "Memorial Day is all about veterans," stated Mayor Thun, and then she proceeded to lead the veterans, their wives, city councilmembers, staff, and others present in reciting together the Pledge of Allegiance.

Victoria Senior of the Year. I am very happy to let you know that Dave Lindgren has been chosen as the Victoria Senior of the Year and was honored at the Carver County Senior Expo on May 11th. Given Dave's countless activities as a former city councilmember and member of the Victoria Senior Commission, plus the many hours he volunteers at Ridgeview Medical Center, it is understandable that Dave would be honored with such an award. Dave is passionate about his city and its people, which puts him at the center of so much activity in Victoria. Linda McNulty Victoria Senior Commission
