Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:
I fail to see the importance of leaving Kim Roden's name out of Ruth Kroen-ing's letter in the last issue of the Gazette.  I think you should reprint it like she wrote it.  Could be handy at election time, don't you think?

To the Editor:
It saddens me to hear that another longtime Victoria business is closing its doors - C.H. Carpenter Lumber.
I read the "2006 Victoria City Council Goals."  One of their goals is to "Improve Customer Service Culture."  However, there was no mention of how the City of Victoria is going to help retain its current retail businesses or a plan to attract new retail businesses such as grocery store, drug store, senior housing, or an industrial area.
I emailed my concerns to Victoria Councilmember Kim Roden and her final response to me was, "If those things are important to you, then you should move to Waconia or Chanhassen."  These things are important to me.

To the Editor:
I would like to thank you for the wonderful story and pictures you did on the Victoria Care Center in the May issue of the Victoria Gazette.  You put the story together so nicely, and the Mother's Day page was beautiful.  We appreciate your time and talent.  God bless you.
Love,
All of us at the Victoria Care Center

To the Editor:
Thanks for putting my picture and news of my watercolor award in your May issue of the Gazette.  Joe told me he is jealous of my having an "in" with the editor.  You are wonderful.  As a thank you, may I frame the little purple cone flower painting I gave you?  You could bring the painting to Ellen's on Saturday.

To the Editor:
The Rev. Herman Gerdsen was a cousin of mine and served at the Lebanon Moravian Church from 1885 for 1893.  We spent Easter with our daughter Pam and her family, Jamie and The Rev. Richard Thierolf, and worshipped at the Lebanon Moravian Church, including the Easter Sunrise Service.  We had a great Easter dinner at the home of Jack and Lorraine Thierolf.
During the move of the Lebanon Moravian Church to a neat new facility, the diaries of The Rev. Herman Gerdsen were found.  The following are interesting excerpts from the Lebanon Moravian Church Diary of The Rev. Herman Gerdsen, who is buried here in Victoria, as are other members of his family:
Sept. 1, 1886.  "Severe earthquake throughout the USA.  Slight shocks at Cornwall (PA) and Shaeferstown (PA), but not perceptible here (Lebanon, PA).  Charlestown, SC, was partially des-troyed."
June 29th, 1888.  "Took part in the cornerstone laying of the Schoeneck Moravian Church near Nazareth, PA."
August 7th, 1893.  "The members of the congregation showed their kindness towards us by presenting us with a purse to enable us to visit the World's Fair.  Accordingly at 2 p.m. we left via Penna Railroad to spend 3 weeks in Minnesota where my parents reside.  The entire distance of 1,200 miles was quickly traversed leaving Harrisburg (PA) at 3:35 p.m. (Monday) we reached Chicago Tuesday 5 p.m. and Minneapolis at 10 on Wednesday morning.
"Our stay in the west was most enjoy-able.  Preached twice for Brother Haeabule in Chaska, once for Brother Mewald at the Mission festival in Zoar, once at the Mission festival in Laketown [now Lake Auburn Moravian Church in Victoria, MN].
"On August 31st, 1893, left Chaska for Chicago where we arrived on Friday, September 1st, stopping at Hotel Eudeavor."
September 2nd, 1893.  "This evening upon our return from the World's Fair, found a letter at the Hotel from the Provincial Elder's Conference tendering me a call to the New York English Church.  After mature deliberation decided to accept the call."

To the Editor:
Could you please send me a pdf of the "New Face, Old Name" article in the City Scoop pages of the May issue of the Gazette, about the Notermann Building?  We would like to include it on our website.  We, of course, will cite the edition and author.  Thank you.
