Angel of the Battlefield by Carol Vadnais, Resident of Victoria.  "At the outbreak of the Civil War, there was not one trained nurse to be found in the whole U.S.  But through the persistent and tireless work of Clara Barton, much relief from suffering would be brought to people's loved ones on the battlefront …"
The Great Victoria Campout by Mike Wartman, former resident of Victoria.  "Not much was needed to camp Victoria style … Our campgrounds often looked like giant quilting bees spread in a pattern around the fire.  No one owned a tent that was allowed out of the garage …"

Hook, Line, & Sinker by Sue Orsen.
Call 'em twins, if you want.  We've got the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, the Twin Towers of the Carlson Companies, and the Minnesota Twins who remain in first place in their division of the American Baseball League.
So why can't we have Twin Hooks?  That's exactly what we had last month in the May edition of the Gazette.  Carver County re-ran its full page ad on places and times to get rid of Special and Household Hazardous Wastes.  Well, the fishhook that I had hidden in the old stack of tires on that page got reprinted along with the rest of the ad.
A second hook also was printed right where I had hidden it in the hamburger of Island View's Tuesday coupon on page 35.  No matter which hook you discovered, your name was entered in the drawing for the ten bucks …"
An African Connection
Dear Editor Sue,  The Lord's peace be within you.  As soon as you see the salutation, you have a good clue to the reference of this letter.  Yes, it is a compliment of the book, Prints of a Priest.
I was in the States this past summer, and from my Ohio home I traveled to Minnesota, which I have done every three years since I left Chaska, Assumption Seminary, and came to Zambia in 1965.
While visiting with Bill and Bea Beddor, whom I am sure you know, they gave me a book and said that I would find it enjoyable reading.  While packing my cases in November, I found them to heavy, thus I sent a couple boxes by post.  Father Elstan Coghill, OFM, was in one of those boxes and arrived in Zambia in March.
When I opened the parcel, Father Juniper was present.  He saw the book and recognized Father Elstan.  I only recognized him when looking at his ordination photo in the book.  I remembered him from Guardian Angels when I first came to Assumption Seminary in 1956.
Well, the story continues with Juniper beginning to read the book.  Two days later I came down the hallway toward his office and I heard him chuckling away.  Thinking he was on the telephone, I wait-ed a moment, but soon realized he was laughing from something he was reading.
When I came in, he read me the story of the dog that was being trained by having his nose rubbed in his business then thrown out the window.  He simply said, "You will want to read this as soon as I finish."
Before I began reading, I looked at the photos, which I suppose 95% of readers do.  And to my delight, there was Mary Meuwissen!  Actually, she was the only person I recognized apart from Father Elstan.  The photos were dated 1995 and 1996.
When I began to read Prints of a Priest, I knew why you published it.  Father Elstan is a brilliant and creative writer with a flair for good and descriptive words.  I must admit I even felt a bit envious of his attractive style and artistic adjectives.  I am sure you were in anxious anticipation of what each month's creative contribution would be to your newspaper.  Thanks for taking all the work to print and publish his writings.
Enclosed are some photographs of Willie, the resident hippo here in Zambia.
With thanks again to you for putting Father Elstan's compositions in print.
Brother Tony
