During the Storm. The wet and windy month of June left its mark in Victoria. Stormy weather on the night of June 7th felled trees and power lines in Victoria, most notably across from the Lake Auburn Moravian Church, where stately evergreens were bowed and broken. ~S.O. After the Storm. Parents and children in all of the animal world, including geese and goslings on Lake Auburn, surveyed the damages, poked their noses at each other for a little while, then went on with their business. According to Victoria City Administrator Steve Sarvi, the city's deputy picked up the American Flag, found on city property at Lake Auburn, folded it, and gave it to the Chanhassen American Legion for disposal. Victoria Town Cop Mike Kerber lives in Chanhassen. ~S.O.
Locks of Love. Tia Schmieg, daughter of Tom and Mary Schmieg of Victoria, has spent the last few years growing her hair in anticipation of donating it to Locks of Love. Tia had ten inches of hair cut off on June 21st for Locks of Love. "I feel glad that I can donate my hair to help someone," said Tia. "My hair can always grow back." Locks of Love furnishes wigs for children. The wigs are handmade from hair donations. Men, women, and children can donate hair. Most hair donors are children. It is a wonderful way for children to give to others. More information is available at www.locksoflove.com. Tia's parents said they are very proud of their daughter. Hope you like my pictures. Tia's "fan club" during the haircut were Peyton Maddern and Brianna Kleman. They were there to cheer her on. Kris Maddern Victoria, Minnesota
Bragging Rights. I am enclosing an award letter for Maria Siegel and I thought her Grandmother Dolores Schrempp of Victoria, and Grandparents Dennis and Gladys Siegel of Waconia, would enjoy the bragging rights. I'm also enclosing $10 for my Gazette subscription. Our daughter Maria won a national Principal's Leadership Award Scholarship of $1,000, one of only 150 such awards presented by the National Association of Secondary Principals and Herff Jones, Inc. High school principals made the nominations based on leadership skills, participation in organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, academic record, and written essay. Maria is a 2005 graduate of Central High School in Norwood Young America. In her senior year, Maria was the class president, student council president, captain of the speech team, co-historian of the National Honor Society, concert choir officer, and chair of the NYA Youth Advisory Council. She was involved in PEERS, Prom Committee, and was a 2004 Homecoming Emcee. In the community, Maria volunteers as a tutor and relay-for-life team captain. In her church, she is a volunteer pianist and lector, preschool Vacation Bible School director, youth group volunteer, and youth choir member. This fall Maria will be attending Gustavus Adolphus College to pursue a major in elementary education with a science concentration and a minor in music. She has also received the Dean's Scholarship and the Norelius Service Award. Steve and Sandy Siegel, Cologne, Minnesota
