I've been told that if all the salmon caught in Canada in one year were laid end to end across the Sahara Desert, the smell would be absolutely awful. Well, I can tell you from first hand experience that the salmon filet laid end to end on a plate and served at the Victoria House looks good, tastes good, and smells good. Mmmm. It's served "on the light side" and is simply delicious. I can also tell you from first hand experience that salmon served at the Redstone restaurant is also excellent, but there were no familiar faces there last weekend, not even Kirby Puckett, when we dined with our favorite son Nick. When Nick was out in San Francisco a couple weeks ago, fishing in the bay, he caught several sharks -- not like Jaws but like sons of Jaws. He threw the youth sharks back into the ocean. When Jenny was fishing up at Leech Lake this past weekend, she caught a bunch of bass but husband Christopher told her the bass weren't fit to eat so she threw them back into the lake. Mom and Dad were fishing up in Canada last month where they caught large lake trout and many walleyes, and also a 37-inch muskie that Mom had to throw back into the lake. When Allan was fishing up in Canada last month, he too caught many walleyes and northern as well as a 34-inch muskie that he had to throw back into the lake. So here's what I say: If all the fish that were caught by members of my family and then thrown back into the water in one year were packed and stacked nicely in my freezer, I'd have enough to fill my belly many times over, and also the big and little bellies of my big and little friends! And now it's time for me to throw the fishhook (without a fish!) back into the pages of the Gazette. Last month it was hidden in the car keys on page 7 in the Victoria State Bank ad. Many of you found it, and Lindsey Hatz of St. Boni had her name drawn to win the ten bucks. Congratulations, Lindsey. I hid the fishhook in this July issue of the Gazette also, but, as is often the case this time of evening before printing, I don't remember just exactly where 'cause it's not the most important thing right now. Right now the most important thing is washing a load of clothes so I have something clean to wear to Crow River Press in Hutchinson, and then hopping in bed so I can get up in time to pick up my lady friends at 7:50 a.m. for the "event." So I'll let the finding and reminding to you. If you spot the fishhook, drop a line to me telling of its whereabouts and sink it in the mail to Box 387, Victoria, Mn 55386. Thanks, bunches. If I laid all the entries in the Fishhook Contest from end to end in my office, I'd be slipping all over the place as I chase hither and fro, wrapping up loose ends just for you.
