Blankets for Orphans. At Waterbrooke we have begun to do ministry with an organization in the Ukraine, Life to Orphans. Why this orphanage? Well, Darcy and Forrest Ferdon, two members of our congregation, adopted a boy and girl from this very orphanage four years ago. Both of them have felt called into fulltime ministry in the Ukraine working with orphans. In the meantime, they want to give back to this orphanage for the gift of their two children. As we did in the orphanage in Hungary, we want to make 200 blankets for the kids in the Ukraine. You know those soft fuzzy polar fleece blankets that are the rage here in the U.S. right now. They don't even have polar fleece in Hungary or the Ukraine. The children in the Ukraine orphanage did not even have diapers or baby bottles. Waterbrooke has since supplied those items. It costs about $20 for each blanket. Is there some way we could advertise in the Gazette to ask the community to help with this well worth project? The ladies at Waterbrooke will make them. If anyone wants to join us, we would love to have them come. As we say in my beloved Canada, "We could all sit around and have a good ol' chinwag." Anyone can send a check for $20 or more to Waterbrooke Fellowship and note "Ukraine Blankets" on the memo line, and we'll see that you get a receipt for income tax purposes. Thanks, Sue. How Victoria has changed! It was great to talk to you this morning. I think about you often. I go online and read the Gazette. Makes me miss living there, except for the winters. I am a total wimp about cold weather. What I do miss about Victoria, and all of Minnesota, is the quality of life, and the culture … the people … the wonderful people I got to know while I lived in Victoria. I go online to your photo album page and keep up with your comings and goings plus photos of Jenny and Nick and those beautiful grandchildren. As I read the online edition of the Gazette, there are a lot of people I don't know, of course, given that it's been 15 years since we left Victoria and it has grown phenomenally. But the names of those I do remember bring a smile or a tear. Dick and I were up there a couple years ago to visit Dick's son who lives in Fridley. We drove out to Victoria and stopped in at Hartman's office. We were able to talk to Jerry and Terry but missed seeing Jeff. We drove by our old house on 80th Street and saw that it hadn't changed much, but that the trees were huge. Stopped by the Tree Farm but Anne wasn't there and George Notermann had retired. So many changes, but so much seemed the same. I think about all the times you and I went to lunch at Cathy (Vanderlinde) Webster's restaurant and had good ol' sauerkraut and ribs. And I remember the first time we met and how we started a Bible study in my home. Please say hi to Bonnie Fritz … and to Caroline Hartman, Julianne Wartman … and other names that escape me at the moment. Sue, thanks for your friendship and for the Victoria Gazette. You are a very special, talented lady, and I am proud to call you friend. Love, Nancy Maynard Kingston, Tennessee
