To the Editor: Wow! I certainly didn't expect the lovely photos and focus on the article I submitted last month about the new St. Victoria Church. Thank you for all you do in providing Victoria with such a wonderful paper all year round! Jamie Moore, Director of Music and Liturgy Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: Barbara and I wish to thank you for the timely and interesting front page article in the latest July issue of the Gazette. Neither of us had seen the Declaration of Independence in print for a very long time. The words brought back into focus many of the things we need to remember when we are confronted with the problems of today. We are proud of our country and should remember those who established it in such a way that it has been able to pro-vide freedom and prosperity for so many. Jim and Barbara Carlson Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: I'm Germaine's brother up here in St. Joe. Your son went to Saint John's University, didn't he? What is he doing now? I went to school there for ten years and then worked at the Liturgical Press for forty years. Now I do freelance editing for them out of my home. And how are my sisters in Victoria? They only get up here about once every three or four years so I hardly know them anymore. St. Joe is setting up stands by the church for the Fourth of July. They expect about 20,000 people here for the parade and picnic. Last year the picnic brought in $90,000 for the church. Almost obscene, isn't it, for a town of 5,000? You certainly have the area, not just Victoria, enthused with your paper. Very good for the community. I happened upon the fishhook impaled in a robin's wing in the last issue but realize that I am too late to get the worm. I often wish that you could put a map of Victoria in the Gazette sometime. We in the diaspora don't know where 78th and Bavaria is located. The best to you and your family. John (Jack) Schneider St. Joseph, Minnesota
To the Editor: Supplying children with all the essen-tials to begin a new school year can be quite costly, especially for families with limited financial means. Parents end up spending, per child, an estimated $100 each year on back to school supplies. The CAP Agency will combine its annual Coats for Kids winter coat distri-bution with a school supply distribution scheduled for mid August. Scott and Carver County families eligible for CAP Agency services may receive school sup-plies as well as winter coats for their children. From kindergartners excited about their first day in school to teenagers anxious to fit in with the crowd, donated school supplies make a big difference to these young people. The supplies include all the basics - notebooks, rulers, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, folders, scissors, glue, erasers, paper, and backpacks. There is always a great need for supplies for older students such as scientific calculators, metal com-pass, and protractors. The project expects to serve over 800 children this year. Any schools, churches, or organiza-tions interested in hosting a school supply drive on behalf of the CAP Agency are asked to contact Linda Shelton at 952-402-9856. The Agency is requesting that donations be dropped off by August 5th for the mid August distribution. Dona-tions are accepted between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the CAP Agency, 712 Canter-bury Road South, Shakopee, MN 55379. The CAP Agency is a private nonpro-fit organization serving children, families, and senior citizens of Scott, Carver, and Dakota Counties. Mary Riley CAP Agency
To the Editor: Hard to believe it's County Fair time again. Soon the leaves will change color again. Four months until Christmas. I've already seen ads in catalogs and June magazines for Christmas decorations. Some people do shop early for Christmas. That is not always such a good idea, especially if the store has a 30-day return policy. The gang at Deer Run playing cow pasture pool (aka, golf) will either have to score a hole-in-one or reel in a big one. Decisions, decisions. Hmmm. They can discover it over chow at the Victoria House and check out the fishhook in the July Gazette on page 9. Kay Meuwissen Chaska, Minnesota
To the Editor: I am Thom Derr's sister in law and would like to read his articles online. How can I access them? When I go to the "Headline" click at VictoriaGazette.com and scroll down to see the article he has written in your various papers, I do not get the capability to access it. I would appreciate your help. Thanks, and I hope you have a great day. Yvette Gautreaux Denham Springs, Louisiana
EDITOR'S NOTE: I do not put the com-plete articles of any columnist on my website. I also enjoy Thom and his columns and so do many others. Thanks for your interest. Maybe you'd like to become a subscriber? Click here for more letters.
