Sometimes she's in the garden. Sometimes she's in the den. Sometimes she's in the kitchen. On the third weekend of every July she's in Lions Park, behind her man, on her feet, serving food to the community in the heat of the day, by the sweat of her brow, for hours on end. Behind every good Victoria Lion is a woman helping to raise thousands of dollars for the community through her generous gift of time and labor, not to mention sweet disposition and service with a smile. At the end of her grueling four-hour shift each year at this time, she drags herself home to soap and shower in order to get the grease out of her nostrils, out of her hair, out of her skin. Splatters of grease also saturate her Lion King who cooks hundreds and thousands of fresh hamburger patties on the piping hot grill. Those Victoria Lions do a lot of other things, of course, which are recognized on and off throughout the years in the Gazette and elsewhere. But this feature story isn't meant to be a history of the Victoria Lions. It's meant to recognize the fact that for every king in a deck, there's a queen, and the name of the game is not Old Maid. The Victoria Lions have statistics on quantity of food and beverage that their good ladies help sell and serve on this annual Lions Tournament Weekend in July. According to newly installed Victoria Lion President Dennis Polzin, this year's Tournament Weekend was another success. How much food was sold from under the two Lions Shelters at Lions Park in Victoria? *3,320 hamburgers! *1,255 hotdogs! *600 brats! *487 cases of beer! *130 cases of pop! *120 cases of water! How much profit does this entail for the Victoria Lions? All costs were not tabulated at this time; hopefully it'll be reported to you in the future through the monthly column in the Gazette entitled, "From the Lions Den." Over the years the Victoria Lions have donated over a half-million dollars in goods and services to the citizens and taxpayers of Victoria, more than any other Victoria organization in its lifetime. And the Victoria Lions have only been in existence since 1966. Behind every good man is a good woman. Sometimes she's at the mall. Sometimes she's in church. Sometimes she's in the laundry room. And at least once a year she's serving hundreds of hamburgers to the community, making correct change, and counting the minutes that are left on her work shift. Thank you, ladies, including all of those not photographed, for standing by your man.
