From the Editor

If one cannot be inspired to write while riding the waves of Lake Minnetonka, I should think one cannot be inspired to write, or think, at all.  One hundred thousand blessings surround us as we partake of the delicious day, and my heart swells in gratitude.
We are safe and happy in each other's company and little else matters in the world, at least for the moment.  I'm talking not just about me and Allan, but also the company of blueness and breeze, water and wake, sun and soda, and the horizon is clear on this unclouded day.
As we bob in the bay, I ask Allan to throw me the front section of the Sunday paper, since he's now reaching for the sports section.  A Sunday cruise with a casual read and intermittent cat naps, what more could anyone ask for?
Within a few minutes I realize I should not have asked for that newspaper.  The topics are not pleasant, and common sense seems to be lacking in many of the reports and discussions, at least in my opinion.
With every turn of the page, I wonder why I keep turning the page.  It's spoiling my day on the lake.  Maybe I should write them a letter to the editor and clear the clouds that have moved into the bay.  Okay, I will.  I'll write it this minute.

Dear Editors of the Star Tribune,
Here is what I think about that.
Cell phones.  I don't think we should allow the use of cell phones or their counterparts in any moving vehicle.  In my opinion, this includes planes and trains as well as automobiles, and even boats!  I'm throwing mine in the water right now.  In fact, it is my opinion we should not allow their use when we, ourselves, are moving.  So away with cell phones when we are driving or riding or walking.  We might trip over each other, or even ourselves!  Damn cell phones altogether, damn it.  People are not meant to walk and talk at the same time.
Stem cell research.  I don't think we should prohibit the use of stem cell research on embryos -- or on anyone else for that matter.  In my opinion, we should conduct stem cell research on anyone who has a stem - including you and me, dead or alive.  And we should not worry about granting permission.  Aggressors should have all the rights, especially if the aggressor is older than an embryo.  If you've got a stem and a cell, on with the research!  To hell with humanity!
Tax cuts.  I don't think there should be tax cuts.  In my opinion, there should only be tax increases.  And we should continue to pay for other people's abortions and wayward ways with those taxes.  Everything should be taxable, except our sense of justice and fair play.  We should also continue to pay the government salaries of Congressmen who fornicate and adulterate and bifurcate and prevaricate ... even if they have no vertebrate.
Religion.  I don't think there should be any telltale signs of religion in public.  In my opinion, we should not reveal religion at any time, especially not the Ten Commandments.   We must never imply that this country was founded on Christian principles.  Show us Buddha!  Show us the Ayatollah!  Show us the Golden Calf!  But don't show us Jesus Christ or His Blessed Mother except in despicable manner.  We might be reminded of what we've done, and what we continue to do.  It could be embarrassing.
Parenting.  I don't think we should expect people to rely on an innate ability or tendency to do what's best for their children.  In my opinion, everyone should receive instruction manuals.
1) Babies must always be placed in carseats in the car.  2) Carseats for babies must always be placed in the backseat out of the reach of parents.
3) When babies cry or need attention in their carseat in the backseat, ignore them and they will cry themselves to sleep.  4) When you get out of the car, try not to forget the sleeping baby.
5) Pick up milk on the way home if your baby has survived.
Tigers.  I don't think we have enough White Siberian Tigers in the world.  In my opinion, we should clone and propagate them until there are at least 1.8 million.  We should create incentives for people to raise baby tigers instead of baby people.  We might also consider an instruction manual along with the tiger in the event it bites somebody else's baby.  We must find more homes for more tigers and keep them out of zoos and other institutions.
And now you know what I think about that.  You're also free to write me at any time.

Oofda!  I'm feeling much better, thank you.  Next time I'm out on a glorious day on Lake Minnetonka, I will not ask for one thing, and surely not the daily paper.  The inspiration of one hundred thousand blessings can be swept overboard so easily.   -- Sue
