First Lady Laura Bush announced that the President requested an $18 million increase in his 2005 budget for the National Endowment for the Arts to fund a major new initiative, American Masterpieces.  This increase to $139.4 million is the largest increase for the Arts Endowment budget since 1984.
Robert Booker, executive director of the MN State Arts Board, was invited by Mrs. Bush to the White House for a March 22nd symposium on Classic American Stories.  Said Mr. Booker, "I am very pleased to announce the President's strong support for this initiative and for the arts in this country.  Minnesotans will benefit greatly from this increased support."
The announcement was made by the First Lady at a National Endowment for the Arts press conference.
