FINAL CHAPTER ON THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THAT DIDN'T COME TO VICTORIA -- AND HAUNTING QUOTES FROM THE PAST.
On March 9th, in one more valiant effort to obtain the new public elemen-tary school for Victoria, several Victoria residents spoke again to the School Board of District #112.  Each of the seven board members then spoke.  At the end, the School Board unani-mously denied a motion to reconsider its decision to build the school in Chaska rather than in Victoria where all representations and referendum documents placed the school.
History demands this final chapter.
Resident Lisa Weir:  "It's been difficult for everybody.  I urge you not to be in such a rush to move forward as to sacrifice the quality of your decision.  The Chaska site is not the right decision.  I ask you to make a motion to revote and make a second to that motion.  We ask, at the very least, that each board member goes on record with their vote.
"Conflict can be a productive thing.  But I question in my mind who is the Board serving -- the citizens or itself?  I don't say that to be accusatory.
"If you view this decision primarily as a financial decision, I can guess where you're going to go.  But if it is more than that, more than financial, I urge you to demonstrate that you believe Victoria is the best site."
Resident Karen Eischens:  "It's a 35-minute bus ride, one way, to school for our son.  He comes home tired.  The new site you've chosen is going to be even further.
"A school gives a sense of belong-ing to a community.  I'd like you to vote to reconsider and second that vote.  I bring my kids here to Chaska to preschool and I feel I'm treading on foreign soil.  This has turned into a bloody battle.  I want to make sure our kids are not exposed to all of this adult baloney.  And I don't approve of grading going on at the new site while the kids are in school."
Resident Mary Velazquez:  "This is an opportunity for a full-board vote.  The process was not followed.  All actions had led to the school being located in Victoria.  Certain information was not provided before the referendum, such as (#1) Who was the school for?  and (#2) Where would it be located?
"These processes are very important -- to protect us under the federal and state constitutions.  Whether it was intentional or not, people voting in the referendum believed the school was going to be in Victoria.  I'm concerned that the last vote was a tie.  There are rules and procedures here to protect us.  I encourage each of you to ask yourself, did the voter believe the school was going to be built in Victoria?  The answer is yes."
Resident and city councilmember Jim Paulsen:  "I formally ask you to reconsider your January 14th vote.  Victoria and the School Board began a process 18 months ago that located the school in Victoria.  It's only been in the last 60 days that you have gone off track.  Getting back on track means a great deal to me.
"We want to be conciliatory.  We want to work with you.  I think it's unfair for you to attach preconditions.  The School Board is the only group that can build a school.  This should never happen again.  Establishing preconditions is not how a School Board should conduct itself."  Click here to continue.
