The Victoria GAZETTE

Sue’s Album

A symphony of photos

and fewer than a thousand words

at www.VictoriaGazette.com

A Year in Review by Tom Abts, Deer Run Golf Pro.  “We’ve closed the golf course for the season.  We always close by November 1st because the snows come.  In 1991 we tried to stay open as late  as possible, and then we got hit by the Halloween Blizzard.  Because we hadn’t put the course to bed, we had to pay the price for it in the spring.”

Enki Tap Room by Sue Orsen .  “I was fortunate to be invited to the Soft Opening of Enki Brewing at their impressive new location in Victoria.  Owners  John Hayes and Dan Norton said their goal was to have customers say “Wow!” when they turn the corner just inside the front door of their Tap room.  That goal was met.  Wow!

Finding Our Way by Tom Stumpf, Cowboy Correspondent..  “People often refer to times of yesteryear with the trite and overused expression ’ the good ol’ days.’  Yes, the times gone by did have their redeeming qualities, and people who achieve the stature of ‘ long in the tooth’ will hearken back to simper times with a distance gaze to nowhere and a little mist in their eyes.”

Resisting a Rest by Pastor Kevin Dibbley, Waterbrooke Church.  “It seems that for many people today, the discipline of slowing down for the purpose of rest and reflection is completely counter intuitive.  Who has time to slow down, to shift gears, to be silent, and to reflect?”

Time to Catch Up by Chuck Freiberg, Up North Cabin Guy.  “I have discovered that once you’re retired, the standard 24-hour day is just not long enough to get everything done.  In my defense, I turned 66 years old last month.  The Cabin Gal’s birthday is in December, and that’s all I can say about that.”

Annual Sunset Fest by Sue Orsen.  “It took place at St. Victoria on August 27th and included a 5tK All Saints Run, an Outdoor Mass which was moved indoors because of the rain, good dinner, games for kids, bingo, a raffle drawing and music.”

Fire Dept Open House by Fire Chief Andrew Heger.  “We had a great turnout for the event, probably one of our best in recent years.  The Monday night worked well for everyone.  Also, we had every one of our firefighters in attendance.  This was something we were not always able to accomplish with the Saturday events.”

Library Events Focus on Vetereans by Randy Maluchnik, Carver County Commissioner.  “Veterans Day is an official U.S. public holiday observed annually on November 11th.  It is a time to honor all U.S. Military Veterans and thank them for their sacrifices and service to our country.”

Not Your Thanksgiving Turkey by Al Orsen.  An amazing photograph of several wild turkey strutting near the Wooddale Community Church.

‘Til the Storm Passes By by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette.  “Despite the personal sacrifices and assaults, Mayor Tom O’Connor feels the responsibility to remain at the helm for the sake of the citizens and the city.  Besides that, he continues to enjoy the work.”

Picking the Mayor’s Mind by Sue Orsen.  Replied Mayor Tom O’Connor. “We represent all the residents of Victoria and were elected to study the issues and make what we feel is the best informed decisions.”

More Energy for Victoria by Sue Orsen.  “New distribution lines for Xcel Energy were installed within the City of Victoria during September and October, some overhead and some underground.”

The Bounty of Super Sides by Christie Schlueter, Regular Victoria Visitor.  “Ready for the bounty of fall?  When preparing meals for those special occasions, you need a side dish that stands out from the rest.  Any one of these will surely please your tastebuds.”

How Does Your Garden Grow by James M. Kushiner, Executive Editor of Touchstone.  “God has an unending abundance of blessings and is only limited by the size and number of hearts to contain it and then give it away.  A sower went out to sow … we’re the soil.  He’s the Vine — bring forth fruit abundantly.”

Jon Ragnow, 54, of Victoria died unexpectedly on October 1st at his home.

Victoria’s Library Log by Kathy Perschmann, Carver County Library System.  “All Carver County Libraries will be closed until 1 p.m. on November 4th for staff training, and closed all day on November 11th, 24th, and 25th.

Lions Cross-Country Invitational by Victoria Lion Kurt Zuppke.  “This year there were 25 boys and 23 girls’ teams.  Our tea of Victoria Lions volunteers worked the ropes, coral, and distributed water and fresh apples to the runners.”

30 Years Ago the Gazette featured the Victoria  Lions in “It’s Grand to be On Hand.”

20 Years Ago the Gazette featured Carver County Sheriff Al Wallin and his wife Sharon in  “At the Doorway.”

10 Years Ago the Gazette featured Editor Sue and husband’s recent trip, along with their travel friends, in “Under the Tuscan Sun.”

One Giant Step by Sue Orsen.  A reprint from the August 1999 Gazette celebrating 30 years of Lions Baseball Tournaments in Victoria.

Towns are Dead? by Jim Klobuchar.  A reprint from a Fall 1971 Star Tribune celebrating the Victoria Lions 5th Anniversary.

Fall Morning on Pierson Lake by Kurt Zuppke.  A stunning photograph of the morning mist with the eyes of an artist.
