Sue’s Album

A symphony of photos

and fewer than a thousand words

at www.VictoriaGazette.com

Double, Double Toil and Trouble by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette.  “As the pot of nasty ingredients continued to cook with conflict and contention in 2018, it boiled over and flowed into the community like a plague.  Those stirring the pot seldom put the lid on it or turned down the heat.”  Click on Front Page for more.

Hopes for the New Year by Tom Abts, Deer Run Golf Pro.  “I’d love to see the Vikings win the Super Bowl before I leave the planet.  I’d love to see 2019 give us the best golf weather in 30 years.  I’d love to see people more respectful of each other.”

Dinner Gatherings for Christmas 2018 by Sue Orsen.  “It started with two-fers when my daughter Jenny and I would get the same jammie pants and we’d wear them when we were at each other’s home.  It gave the guys something to talk about.  Then it turned into three-fers.”

Down TV Memory Lane by Steve Jesberg, Former Resident of Victoria  II.  “I was at a recent Christmas house party a few nights ago and we were trying to decide on a party game to play.  Someone mentioned Trivial Pursuit.  Being a bunch of Baby Boomers on the far edge of booming, we made up our own trivia questions.”

Church Renovation at St. John the Baptist in Excelsior by Kathleen Hollahan, Excelsior.  “On Saturday, December 22nd, we celebrated our first Mass in the newly renovated church.  In February, Archbishop Hebda will join us for dedication of the new altar.”

Smart Salting for the New Year by Bill Olson, Victoria, MCWD.  “Salt provides a quick and easy way to melt ice, but did you know that the salt you lay down on your driveway, sidewalk, or steps eventually makes its way into lakes and streams where it hurts fish, bird, and aquatic plants and insects?”

Murie. Trute, 70, died December 15th.

Thomas Williams, 85, died December 18th.

Approving 2019 Budget in Carver County by Eric Sieger, Communications.  “The 2019 budget of $147 million increased $23 million from 2018.  The primary driver is a $19.6 million increase for road and b ridge capital improvements.  The levy increase of 4.9% (to $56.3 million) will fund the remaining gap.”

Groundbreaking of New Health Facility by Griffin Severson.  “Twin Cities Orthopedics broke ground on a premier physical therapy and sports performance center in Waconia during a celebration in December at the future site located at the southwest corner of Main Street East and Airport Road.”

Fresh Start Recipes for the New Year by Christie Schlueter, Regular Victoria Visitor.  “With holidays behind us, it’s time to think about fresh starts.  Here are some recipes that represent freshness in meals.

I Hereby Do Solemnly Swear by Tom Stumpf, Cowboy Correspondent.  “Well, well, here we go again!  It’s that special time of year when many of us vow to resolve with a great deal of resolution to become better versions of ourselves.  So perhaps I can lose a few pounds and lighten the load that I carry around as my constant companion.”

The Mission Trip That Changed My Life by Randy Maluchnik, Carver County Commissioner.  “This past November, I traveled to Puerto Rico with the United Methodist Committee on Relief, to a remote rural area where Category 4 Hurricane Maria had first reached the Puerto Rican island on September 20th, 2017.”

Christmas Carols at Enki Brewing by Sue Orsen.  “The St. Victoria Choir led an evening of Christmas carols at Enki on Monday evening, December 17th.  Enki owners Dan Norton and John Hayes were on hand for the festivities and the crowd.”

Carp and Smelt and a Boy’s Life in Victoria by Mike Wartman, Former Resident of Victoria.  “In 2019 I resolve to volunteer for carp detail.  I resolve to volunteer for smelt detail.  I resolve to read Alexander Pope’s ‘Essay on Man.”

Year End Summary by Gayle Degler, Chair, Carver County Board.  “It’s been another outstanding year.  We completed many key projects, especially when it comes to roadways.  Again, the County is highly ranked in terms of the happiest and healthiest in the nation.”
