Families and Friends Fishing in the Fog by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette.  “An outdoor temperature of 40 degrees made this year’s annual Victoria Fishing Contest on Sunday, February 3rd, one of the most popular ever.  Families and friends arrived in droves to go fishing in the fog.  Largest predator fish weighed in at 6.245 pounds.  Click on Front Page.

The New Rules by Tom Abts, Deer Run Golf Pro.  “Rules:  One of a set of explicit or understood regulations governing conduct within a particular activity.”  Do you “understand” the new Rules of Golf?  Unnecessary golf rules are not good laws but just traps for money.”

Carver County Update by Randy Maluchnik, Carver County Commissioner.  “I recently saw a letter to the editor about the County’s 2019 budget.  It mentions the budget increase of $23 million, which is accurate.  This doesn’t tell the entire story, though.  Of this $23 million, $19.6 million is for roads and bridge projects which are almost entirely funded by non-county tax dollars.”

Hands on Activities by Jeremy Engebretson, Administrative Dean.  “Students in the 2/3 multi-age and 3rd grade classes at the Victoria Elementary School experienced several hands-on activities led by the Science Museum of Minnesota.  The focused on the engineering process and the redesigning to improve an original prototype.”

Senate Scott Jensen and the MN State Senate by Joel Hanson, Communications.  “Senator Scott Jensen and his fellow Senate Republican colleagues unveiled a number of innovative ideas aimed at reducing healthcare costs, promising to cut through red tape to give consumers better choices and more to say in their own care.”

Representative Greg Boe and the MN State House by Mitch Wollin, Communications.  “Rep. Greg Boe took the oath of office as he was sworn in to the MN House of Representatives on January 8th during a ceremony at the Capitol.  Boe was elected to his first term in November to District 47B which includes Chaska and portions of Victoria, Chanhassen, and Laketown Township.”

Jason Kamerud Sworn in as New Sheriff in Carver County by Eric Sieger, Communications.  “Jason Kamerud brings 28 years with the Carver County Sheriff’s Office to his new position, including the last 12 years as part of the Sheriff’s administrative team.  He served as Chief Deputy the past six years.”

Health Care Scholar-ships “Each year Ridgeview Foundation offers $2,000 scholarship to area college-bound high school seniors interested in pursuing a health care career.”

Seems Like Yesterday by Mike Wartman, Former Resident of Victoria.  “A somewhat recent line-by-line and picture perusal of my favorite newspaper, the Victoria Gazette, revealed an interesting tidbit.  My perusal identified a personal anniversary of 30 years of writing in the Victoria Gazette.  Yes, I finally made the Seems Like Yesterday 30 Years Ago column.”

Victoria Student Honors on Campuses Near and Far.  Dozens of Victoria students made the fall 2018 Dean’s Lists at colleges and universities across the nation.

More Winter  People by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette.  “Victoria firefighters always oblige the Victoria Gazette camera.”  A 15-inches wide photo gives a feel for the crowd on the lake this year.

A Blooming NFL Fan by Tom Stumpf, Cowboy Correspondent.  “There are a handful of us from that special generation of 50 years past when blooming NFL fans from the great frozen tundra witnessed the arrival and almost instant success of the vaunted purple clad gladiators with the horns on their helmets, the very symbol of dread and loathing from all the other teams then playing in the National Football League.”

Battling Carp Through the Winter by Bill Olson, Victoria, MCWD. “Despite cold temperatures, snow, and ice, winter is actually the best time to do certain construction activities, especially projects located on or near lakes and streams.  Frozen water and frozen ground make the work easier, and that’s certainly the case in the Six Mile Creek-Halsted Bay Subwatershed this season.”
