The Scoop

at City Hall

To the Editor:

As you read this email, the Salvation Army is providing much needed food, cleanup kits, and emotional and spiritual support to the victims of Hurricane Sandy.  The Salvation Army is an amazing, reliable, and efficient organization.

Doing the most good for so many years is why I was ringing the bell at the red kettle on Saturday morning, November 10th, at 8 a.m. (Yikes!) at the Shorewood Cub foods.

Some of you know that Bruce worked with the men's addiction group at the downtown Salvation Army for almost four years now.  This year our whole office took turns ringing the bell of good news during November's special Rock the Red Kettle Event, which teamed up with KOOL 108.

The goal was to raise $1,000 in each kettle for a total of $108,000 -- a new record for a kickoff to a Twin Cities Salvation Army campaign.  Funds stay in the Twin Cities neighborhoods served by Salvation Army.  Not only do we count our blessings, but we pass the blessings on.

Thanks so much for supporting a solid cause.

To the Editor:

We are long overdue in sending this thank you letter to great people at the Victoria Fire Department.  So that you know what I am thanking for, I have to go back ten months.

Last Christmas Eve, we were out of our home, attending church on Christmas Eve at St. Victoria's.  On the way home, we drove past a couple of fire trucks in our neighborhood of Wintergreen, which made us think it was a tough night for the fire department to be out on a call.

When we arrived at home, much to our dismay, the remaining fire trucks and firefighters were all standing at our front door.  We  discovered, unfortunately, in our haste to get to church, we left our stove top turned on with a soup still cooking.

When the police and the fire department arrived, they proceeded to do the following:  found access into the home without having to break in, turned off the stove, removed the pan from the house (just in time, otherwise a fire would have started), changed all the smoke alarm batteries, and had fans in place airing out the house!

Great job and great people!  We would like to say, "Thank You!" for a job well done and for preserving our Christmas holiday and, more importantly, our home.  We apologize for the long overdue note but hopefully everyone knows how much we appreciate their time and efforts in keeping our home and community safe.

         Best regards.

To the Editor:

I just wanted to thank you once more for your help in the recent election.  I look forward to seeing you in church and listening to the choir.

To the Editor:

So often we forget to thank people for making our lives much happier until it is too late.  I wish to do that at this happy season.  Since I went to the seminary in Illinois for nine months of the years from 1947 to 1953 and made my home elsewhere after that, you might say I have been away from Victoria since then.

I still enjoy the Victoria Gazette even though I don't know many people.  Sue, you are a great writer.  When your feature article on page one is about someone I don't know, I do know that person when I'm finished.

Until I moved to assisted living, I kept all of Mike Wartman's columns and hundreds of pictures and articles of people I used to know.

Wilbert and Darlene Kelzer stopped by twice to visit me.  What great visits we had talking about the olden days of Victoria.  My sister Jeannie and I were born in the house at the bottom of the page in the June 2012 Gazette, under the title "Remember When, 100 Years Ago in Victoria."  I accidentally snipped off the page number.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea.  Sue, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and all the fine people who still live in Victoria.
