Cruising Down the River by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette.  “An adventure in mid March took us cruising down the Mississippi River as it was flooding from Memphis to New Orleans.  The trip was on our calendar before high water hit the headlines.  Click on Front Page.

Bent, Perhaps, Not Broken by Tom Stumpf, Cowboy Correspondent.  “Many of you good readers have probably heard the old axiom, ‘Rules were meant to be broken.’  Not sure who first uttered that opinion, suffice it to say it would not have been a nun in charge of a room full of grade schoolers, at least none of the good sisters with whom I was more acquainted that I wanted to be.”

Look at the Birds by Pastor Kevin Dibbley, Waterbrooke Christian Church.  “As I walked into my office this morning, it sounded like every bird on the planet was singing from the top end of Wassermann Lake.  Our church building is on the shoreline and so, instead of going inside, I strolled to the lake.”

Library’s ’Giving Day Campaign’ is April 10th by Patrick Jones, Manager, Victoria Library  “The Friends of the Victoria Library is raising funds through an inaugural Library Giving Day Campaign.  This one-day online fundraising occurs April 10th and encourages patrons and library lovers to make a gift to their local library.”

The American Queen by Sue Orsen/The American Queen.  “By the time our eight day cruise on the American Queen ended, we could find our way around the ship pretty well.  We learned that Captain Henry M. Shreve (1785-1851) was the steamboat captain who opened the Mississippi, Ohio, and Red Rivers to steamboat navigation.”

Carver County Update by Randy Maluchnik, Carver County Commissioner.  “Providing funding for safety improvements on Hwy 212 has long been a county priority and the end is in sight.  The county has asked the legislature to provide $38 million for the expansion of U.S. Hwy 212 to a four-lane expressway between the Cities of Cologne and NYA.”

Remember When the Victoria Fire Department held a Hog Roast Fundraiser?  “It was in April 1999 — twenty years ago — that the Fire Dept announced that for the first time in more than 30 years, the Dept would not be having its annual Smelt Fry.  They will be having instead their first Annual Hog Roast.”

30 Years Ago the Gazette featured Bernard and Monica Metzer in “Meet the Metgers.”

20 Years Ago the Gazette featured Julius and Connie Moehl in “The Prairie is My Garden.”

10 Years Ago the Gazette featured Rick and Lois Plocher, owners of Floyd’s, in “Buckled at the Bar.”

How My Knobby Little Knees Got Wrecked in Victoria by Mike Wartman, Former Resident of Victoria.  “On March 21st I joined the throngs of folks with knee problems and decided to have one replaced.  Out with the old and in with the new took on new meaning as an old left knee was hacked and sawed away and a new model was carefully popped into place and is now ruling that side of the body.”

Victoria is The Place To Be!  by Vicki Bont, Victoria, MN.  “When I was recently in San Diego for six weeks to visit my 99-year old mother, Mom and I did one of my favorite things.  We went to the swap meet.  The swap meet grew out of surfers and bikers in the late ‘50’s heading beachside on early Saturday mornings to trade skills and swapping parts with no memory involved.”

Know Thyself by Tom Abts, Deer Run Golf Pro.  “Remember when Coca Cola abandoned Coke Classic?  They almost folded.  There will always be a market for classic things, especially if what made them classic is continued.”

Students Raise $3 Million for Children’s Hospital in Iowa by Rich Klatt, University of Iowa.  “Taylor Drazan of Victoria was one of more than 1,700 current University of Iowa students who collaborated to raise almost $3 million in financial support for the Stead Family Children’s Hospital as participants in the 25th annual University of Iowa Dance Marathon.”

The Victoria Library Log by Jodi Edstrom, Youth Services Librarian.  “Some of the programs include Stuck on Science Storytimes, Earth Day Storytime, Tech Tuesday, and Arts in April/Paint Pouring.”

The Sheriff’s Shingle by Tamera Froemming, Administrative Services Manager.  “The Carver County Sheriff’s Office is again participating in the Medicine Take Back Initiative Program.  Residents are invited to show up with their unwanted medications and drugs and place them in a collection box, no questions asked, and at no cost.”

Lunchtime Favorites by Christie Schlueter, Regular Visitor to Victoria.  “Getting tired of boring lunches?  Try my favorites and perk it up.  It is important to eat healthy lunches to give you nourishment for the day.  You can make all of these the night before.”

Happy 50th!  Roger and Marge Leuthner of Victoria are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with a Free Dance and Open House at the Pla-Mor Ballroom in Glencoe on Sunday, May 5th, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.
